Film Review: Warcraft – Was it worth being made into a film?

Hollywood has adapted yet another video game into a film but this one may have not received the reception which filmmakers hoped.

Ever since the end of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, many film studios have tried and tried again to create another film franchise which explores a world of fantasy similar to Middle Earth but they just cant do it.

Warcraft is known by many gamers as one of the greatest video game franchises of all time and when it was announced a few months back that we would be seeing a Warcraft film, this left many people very uncertain.

Now the film arrived in cinemas and there was a split within the audience. You had the gamers who already knew about the whole Warcraft world and you had the film fans who didn’t even know a single thing about Warcraft and were impressed by the film trailer and decided to go and watch it.

So the film opens and we see that an orc shaman Gul’dan uses dark magic to open a portal to the human realm of Azeroth for the orcs to go to and claim as their new world because theirs is coming to an end. Supported by the fierce fighter Blackhand, Gul’dan organizes the orc clans into a conquering army called the Horde. Uniting to protect Azeroth from these hulking invaders are King Llane, the mighty warrior Anduin Lothar (Travis Fimmel) and the powerful wizard Medivh. As the two races collide, leaders from each side start to question if war is the only answer.

The film to be honest was okay but I think the whole story and plot could have been better. I think there could have been a better introduction to the whole film which would have given film fans a little bit more info on who these characters, worlds and places are but instead Universal just decided to jump straight in.

I felt the film was rushed and maybe could have had a different approach made to making it. The cast and characters were brilliant but I think the one thing that lets it down is the story and the way the director made his approach to the film.

If film studios are going to adapt video games into films then I think they should do it carefully and properly because it can be a very tricky process but they should just try and fit in only a little bit of material in one film and not go over the limit because then you end up with films that are very complicated and fail.

Hollywood have adapted video games into films before. Look at Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia and other films, some were great because the studio and crew did it properly and some were bad because of the lack of passion and organisation.
